Galileo was the oldest of six children. His father was Vincezo Galilei, a famous music teorist and lutenist.
When Galileo was young he wanted to be a priest (seriously) but he went to a University in Pisa for a medical degree, under his fathers wishes. He did not complete the degree though, instead he started to study mathematics. He was the only man in his time to question Aristotle's theories. Aristotle was a Greek philosopher. He was a important figure during the renaissance era. His thinkings of physics and science had a huge impact on medval thought, no one dared questioned him.
Galileo wanted to challenge Aristotle on his theories, and all the teachers were very angry with him and tried everything they could to get him expelled from the university. One day Galileo saw lighting lamps swing and Galileo had an idea, an idea to prove Aristotle wrong. About a week later Galileo invented a pengeloum that had two different weights. Galileo wanted to prove that object with two different weights would stop at the same time. He invited anyone in Pisa who wanted to see his new discovery. Many people came, even some proffesors, when he let the two objects go he let them swing undisturbed. About an hour later both of the objects stopped at the same time. Showing that Aristotle was wrong he was ready to invent!

Galileo's father died in 1591, leaving him in the care of his younger brother, Michelagnolo. (Who knew?)

In 1592 he moved to the University of Pauda, teaching geometry, mechanics, and astrnomy until 1610. During this time period Galileo made significant discoveries in science (such as kinematics of motion and atronomy) he also had his experiments in the leaning tower of Pisa, dropping two objects with different masses of of the tower, acording to some of his pupils the two objects fell at the same time. He also built a telescope that was strong enough to see 3 out of 4 of Jupiter's largest moons. He discovered the fourth one four nights later.
Even though Galileo was a devout Roman Catholc, he fathered three children with Marina Gamba. They had two daughters, Virginia and Livia, and they had one son, Vincenzio. He thought his daughters were unmarriageable, because of their illegitimate birth. The only worthy alternative was a religious life.
In 1610 Galileo published an account of his telscopic discovories of Jupiter's moons. Using this observation he argued that th sun was the center of the Universe instead of the Earth. in 1612 people oposed that the sun was the center of the solar system which Galileo supported. In 1614, Father Tommaso Caccini, from the pulpit of Santa Maria Novella, denounced Galileo's opinion on the motion of the Earh, saying they were dangerous and close to heresy (which means unorthodx). Galileo went to rome to defend himself against these accusation. in 1616, however, Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino handed Galileo an admonition enjoining him neither to advocate nor teach Corpernican astronomy.
